Here, Piper Daniel Laidlaw, 7th King’s Own Scottish
Borderers, would receive a Victoria Cross for an act of
remarkable bravery.
In an interview with the Dundee People’s Journal, Laidlaw
described an explosion which sent a gas cloud back
towards the King’s Own Scottish Borderers’ trenches.
‘You’ve seen skittles go toppling and
staggering in all directions when a ball hits
them; for a moment it was like that with my
company, and then a voice rang out,
“For God’s sake, Laidlaw, pipe ‘em together!”
It was the voice of Lieutenant Young, and
somehow or other I got a breath of clean air
into my lungs, and I struck up the Borderers’
Regimental March’.
